Count Your Blessings

Count Your Blessings

Psalm 103:1-2 (KJV)

“Bless the Lord, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless His holy name. Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits” – Psalm 103:1-2 (KJV)

“Count your blessings, name them one by one, count your blessings, see what God has done! Count your many blessings and it will surprise you what the Lord has done” (Johnson Oatman Jr.). These are the words of a song that should be sung every day to remind us that we are truly blessed; the mere fact that we are alive today is a blessing.

Webster’s Revised Unabridged Dictionary defines a blessing as a declaration of divine favour; and it can also mean a means of happiness; that which promotes prosperity and welfare; a beneficent gift. Based on this definition, one can do some amount of introspection and realise that in spite of the circumstances and situations you are facing presently, the answer to the question “Am I blessed?” is a resounding yes. We all need to thank God for the spiritual and physical blessings bestowed upon us daily.

As you read this devotion today, you may not live in a mansion, but wherever you dwell, thank God for the roof over your head and for the walls and windows that are protecting you from harmful elements because many persons live on the streets. If you have only one hundred dollars in your pocket, you are richer than many others. If you brushed your teeth and had a bath, you are very fortunate, and if you have access to running and clean water to drink, you are privileged and in a better position than millions of people around the world.

Let us not take for granted the so-called ‘routine things’ that we do daily since many people cannot do them for one reason or another. Let us not despise what the Lord has provided for us. Life is seasonal, and in each season, we need to be grateful for what we have and for where we are in the journey. The same song also says, “We don’t deserve it, but yet we are blessed’.

Today let us join with the Psalmist in blessing and thanking the Lord for all His benefits, for He is worthy, and He is greatly to be praised.
